The publication of the government's Animal Welfare Bill on 14 October has been greeted enthusiastically by the RSPCA, which has long called for better laws to prevent animals from suffering neglect and cruelty.
Good
news for animals
If pets could have one Christmas wish – then it
would probably be for the law to provide better protection for them.
Well that wish finally came true last month when the Animal Welfare
Bill became law! The Animal Welfare Act will come into force next year -
by the end of March in Wales, and on 6 April in England.
One of the key elements of the Animal Welfare Act is that owners will
have a legal responsibility to meet the welfare needs of their pets
including:
a proper diet (including water)
somewhere suitable to live
a need to be housed with, or apart from, other animals
ability to express normal behaviour
protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease.
